You have to look up! When you aren’t looking up, you are missing your life. You are missing the lives of those you love.
When something happens, do you experience it, or do you look down to enter it into your phone as a social media event? Your life is not a social media event, it is something meant to be lived, right then, in the moment.
You are going to have to trust me on this one. I have spent many a precious moment looking down. I know what you can miss, and I know that the people you love are tired of looking at the top of your head. Your family and friends want to see your face, they want to see your smile. For that to happen, you have to look up.
You are missing more than you know.
Roses are blooming while you are looking down. Babies are being born, learning to walk, going to their first day of school.
I know you believe you are documenting these things. I know that you want to tell your 400 Facebook friends and 4000 Twitter followers about that amazing thing that just happened, but guess what? While you are typing those 140 characters, you are missing the next thing that happened.
Life is Beauty, Suffering, and Pain
You are missing the beauty of the world around you. You are also missing the suffering and pain of the world around you. It is important to see both. You may know the story of The Supreme Buddha (the first Buddha). He was raised as a prince in a paradise built by his father. He was shielded from aging, disease, suffering and dying in the world outside the palace walls. It was not until he finally saw the world outside those walls that he could decide to change his life and become what we know of him today. He, too needed to “Look Up”.
I am probably the worst at this, but I have been trying. The phone has been in my pocket or purse more often. When I am out walking the dogs, the phone comes out to be used as a camera, not a communication device. When you are taking photos of your surroundings, you are very much “Looking Up”. What new things can you see in the places you have been one hundred times before?
You are going to hurt yourself!
Other than the obvious dangers to walking around not looking where you are going, there are health issues to looking down all of the time. I have hyperlordosis of the cervical and lumbar spine. It isn’t from my phone use, but I have to be mindful of my phone use now and keep my head up. The pain is terrible. You don’t want this. Take my advice, read on.
Here is a health tip for you: For every inch you lean your head forward, you are adding ten pounds of weight to your head. (Physiology of the Joints, Volume III) Rene Cailliet M.D., former director of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Southern California states:
“Head in forward posture can add up to thirty pounds of abnormal leverage on the cervical spine. This can pull the entire spine out of alignment. Forward head posture (FHP) may result in the loss of 30% of vital lung capacity. These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis, which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.”
